suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
Everyone has already done an excellent job of answering your questions, SaltyRobot, so I'll just hit the highlights.
To register for SELEM, you can send your $60 registration fee to me via paypal at adburns@sc.rr.com, or you can mail a check to me at Adam Burns 102 Nightingale MNR, Charleston SC 29418-3038. As others have already stated, this admits you to all events in the auditorium complex for all 3 days, plus it nets you one knit polo shirt with the SELEM logo on it.
If you want extra shirts for you or your guests, they are $20 each, and must be ordered in advance. (You don't need to have a SELEM shirt for everyone, but they do look cool.)
You are welcome to bring friends or family members with you as your guests, but we ask that if any of them are already PL members, that they pay their own registration. (If everyone becomes a guest of someone else, there's nobody left to pay for the rental of the venue.)
As for what actually happens - that's a tougher question to answer. At any given time there are at least 5 things going on at SELEM. Pre-choreographed shows (both beams and graphics) running in the main auditorium, Live shows (often with live music from a DJ) running in "Club-SELEM", maintenance and repair work going on in the woman's dressing room backstage (the so-called "Ion Laser Work Room"), buying and selling of all kinds of hardware in the men's dressing room backstage (the "Buy-Sell-Swap" area), and general discussions and impromptu demonstrations going on either on-stage behind the main curtain or in the lobby / gallery area in front of the auditorium.
In addition to all this, there are special presentations that will be held upstairs in the classroom area at certain times, but unlike everything else mentioned above, we don't run presentations continuously.
For the die-hards who can't stop thinking and talking about lasers after the event shuts down at midnight every night, there is an "after party" each night in the Holliday Inn Express conference room. This often runs until 4 or 5 in the morning. So if you're the type who just can't sleep after a day of overstimulation, this is the place to unwind...
Pretty much everyone who has ever attended SELEM agrees with this statement right here. And really, I think that's the best endorsement we could ask for.
Also, one other update: This year we are trying to offer the ILDA Laser Safety Officer training class again. This will be held on the Monday following SELEM (August 19th) in the Holiday Inn Conference room. The cost of attending this class is *not* included in your SELEM registration fee. It will cost $445 per person, or $395 if you are already an ILDA member. Greg Makhov is available to teach the class, but we need a minimum of 6 people to sign up for it. Right now we only have 3 people who are interested. If we can't find 3 more, we will not be able to hold the class.
I took the LSO class in 2011, and it was GREAT! I strongly recommend this class to anyone who is considering doing shows for the general public.
If anyone is interested in attending the class, please reply in this thread or contact me via PM. Time is getting short now, and I need to give Greg an answer soon as to whether we will have enough people this year or not.
Adam
Not sure that I am one of the three- taking it depends upon being able to come up with the extra $$$.$$-
I have read that being a LSO can be a PLUS if one is seeking a job with a lasershow company- it can give some of the knowledge neededto be a varianced operator. One odd thing I heard recently is that anyone needing to sell/send/transport PJs to Canada can do that easier if they are a LSO.
But we don't get to carry guns, handcuffs or have arrest powers--LOL. sad :-(
Last I spoke with Rick (dallas) i as riding wit him and he too wants to take the course- so if not counted we may be a little closer to the needed number..
I hope we make it I just spent $100 on a laser safety textbook(1000+pages)
For those that don't know- the test after is very hard=IIRC last time it was help after SELEM less than half passed it- they get a do-over for free but only the test not the course-- we are allowed to use our notes from the class- our PCs etc- but I would NOT think that would make the test easy to pass.. better study up a LOT long before SELEM-- hope a few more want to take it- we can check out of our rooms BEFORE the class begins to avoid paying for another day- last time some had to run and get thier stuff out of their rooms while the rest ate lunch- so plan accordingly. the front desk can show you were to put your belongings til after the LSO is over.
Its time to make our transportation plans- car pools can happen but the do not set themselves up---so if you d=have a seat to offer (for a share in the gas costs) or you are in need of a seat post that here asap- I cannot speah for rick but if you are anywhere near Dallas and need a ride contact Rick or myself so we can talk-afaik we will leave TX in time to arrive EARLY on THursday- and not leaving the HIE until after the LSO test. If the LSO does not happen we will prolly leave Sunday night. so step one send your shirt size(s) and $$ to Mr Adam
step two work on transport
do those two and the rest will fall into place it always does...
IMO the suites while costing the most(99$ +tax) can be the most economical . We have always had 4 or 5 peeps pre suite--do the math- 20-25 $(+tax) per nite per person and you get a free feed every morning. Two in a regular room will cost you 40$ each plus tax--
the HIE has a few rollaway beds but its best to bring a comfy airbed- I will bringtwo extras with me if you cannot possibly bring your own- bedding/pillows are at the front desk- the peeps at HIE as super- very helpful and we get a nice discount-you need to tell them you are SELEM when you call about lodging.
btw the suites have a full size kitchen & walmart is next door-could be a good time to bring stuff from your freezer to cook up and save $$ -- free wifi of course at the INN & at the venues-- see you all in Newton---hak
Payment sent.
Medium size shirt please.
I still plan to fly the Cessna in to SELEM this year (pending weather). I'm really looking forward to it since I couldn't make it last year.
Chris
Got you on the list, Chris! Will you be able to help out with the name tags and waivers this year?
Adam
Cool! PM incoming to you and Greg.
Adam
The clock is ticking!
Anyone come up with a SELEM7 Logo?
I haven't received any submissions yet. Would be nice to have something soon though.
In other news, I will be out of town the rest of this week and most of next week, and I probably won't have Internet access, so please contact me on my cell phone (843) 324-0735 if you need to reach me.
