Yes, this can "fool" an audience into thinking they are being scanned, but having seen both side by side an experienced audience could tell the difference, but what the hell!
No, you probably couldn't because what's missing is the sharp beams. The projection onto a screen or scrim from 2,500 lumens looks as bright as a 1W RGB, but the beams seem dimmer/more diffuse.I'll be honest, as a lighting designer I could probably put together an entire show with just video projectors if this works half way decent. Not a bad option;-)
The great value of this technique, in my opinion, is the bandwidth. At 200MPPS, yes that's right, very complex and detailed images (at 1080 x 1920 each pixil = 1/3 mrad) can be layered into a display with the lasers. As the laser struggles to cover a large image its power, whatever that is, becomes spread out. As the video projector covers a larger and larger image less of it's potential power is dumped by the DLP. So, there is a cross over point depending on the relative power of the two projectors.
I haven't made a video of the video yet and I am working on a tutorial re. spatial filtering this week, so maybe P. should chime in here.
I spoke to Bill a few days ago about an issue, and from what he said, I doubt Bill will be around the forums and there are serious reasons for not disturbing him. Justins in Brazil.
You could try contacting Alexey via the web form as he's usually very helpful. His names not on the contact form but if you choose "hardware and software support", I'm sure that will go his way or at least to someone who can help.
Ok, a bit opf a split post here...
First, to the OP, the units that Brad has from Goldenstar are also available in lower power versions, and obviously come in cheaper! Out of all of the current Chinese suppliers you should probably go and check out what they have on offer, as well as Omar/Lightspace as already mentioned. I have quite a lot of Goldenstar 'product' now, although none of their fully finished projectors (I use them for components and bare bones systems to modify as required)
Planters - what sort of content are you showing on the video projectors? Complex laser frames, or more traditional video content?

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?
I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.
How long does it typically take to receive items from Goldenstar, using their least expensive shipping method?
They only have one shipping method, which is air freight (Fedex, DHL, etc), which takes about 4 days, plus however many days your country takes to clear customs.
To the UK, it's around $180 to $200 for a projector and flightcase.

Also, one more question. Searching the forum lead to way more questions than answers.
Inexpensive USB DAC + Software.... Doesn't need to be a crazy robust show designer suite... the easier to use the better. Go.
For ease of use, there are very few. iShow, which is pretty easy to use but is not very good at all. From there, you take a big jump in price but also performance. I would highly recommend Pangolin's FB3 with Quickshow and I think most people will back me on that. The price does jump quite a bit though but for its power and easy of use, I don't think you can go wrong here.
