Thank you for this response and info, Bill.

As I mentioned, I just got these projectors completed recently, so I haven't spent a great deal of time debugging this issue as yet. Although the current "wobble" I'm seeing with my 506's is minimal, I'll reach out to you in PM or Skype just to ensure that it isn't something that would progress into a larger problem down the road.

I have been dealing with an oscillation in my 506 galvos with the 3mm mirrors using modified DT40 Amp boards. I've been able to reduce the oscillation somewhat by zeroing out the Input Offset pot with the galvos and DAC attached but producing no output. At this point they are somewhat stable--and now I'm wondering if I should put the notch filter back on to reduce it completely.

There should not be any oscillation that's for sure. And a notch filter really should not be needed on the 506 for such small mirrors.

The worst part about the notch filter is that almost nobody has the equipment to properly tune it, and so it's not tremendously useful unless it is tuned correctly...

Fearless, if you'd like, you can contact me by email with a picture of what you're experiencing and I'll take a look.

Hmm, I have 3 sets of the 5mm mirrors on DT amps. I'll have a critical look at mine to see how they are projecting, and if I can see any resonances.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

    Bill,
Based on an earlier conversation can you clarify a "who's burred in Grant's tomb" kind'a question? When a scanner is specified for say 30kpps, what is the limit that a scanner is being asked to perform a step response (small as well as large)? At first glance a scanner that can preform a 200usec, small step response is pretty fast, but that would seem to correspond to a 5kHz signal response and that is a long way from 30,000 somethings/ sec.

Similarly, what is the diode modulation frequency range that has to be accommodated to enable 30kpps performance?

Here is a short video of my wobble. It is the best that I can get for now.

Looks like a grounding issue to me. I bet the scanners are 'wobbling' at precisely 60Hz! I'd check the power supply and verify your grounding scheme all the way back to the ilda connector.

My wobble is nothing like that. I'm only getting a wobble +/- 2mm @ ~10M distance when projecting patterns. I don't see any wobble when there are no connections. The PSU for the amps is rhobust enough, and I tried replacing the PSU for the DAC / lasers which was previously sharing a switching PSU with the fans. That didn't help. I'm guessing interference on the input lines even though they are short and shielded. Removing the ground to the amps (currently connected to pin 25) made things significantly worse. I did check and my Y amp does have the notch filter as advised. I'm going to do a little more digging on my end as time permits and if I still can't find the problem, I'll skype with Bill for additional advice.

<edit> Oh, more importantly, that is ONE COOL ROBOT you're building there, Fearless!! Please post some more pics of that!

That looks as though they're almost about to come off. Almost certainly an electrical or mechanical fault.

It's Klatu isn't it from the original, "The Day the Earth Stood Still"?
