Actually, this could apply to both. Alex and Harrison say thanks for the lift. I think owning one of these COILS would be fun for about an hour, but building one would be more fun and for years. I forgot his name, but the grad student that came with Peter may well be our future connection with MIT and might be willing to help you build one. And of course, the one you build HAS TO BE BIGGER. Otherwise, why do it?

I'll start small and work my way up.

BTW, you can tell Alex and Harrison that during our ride, our top speed was 98mph.

Those coils are really cool! Although building it yourself appears to be the way to go. Buying them in finished form is like buying a 10 watt RGB projector at retail! Even the kits are pretty pricey. But doing everything yourself doesn't seem too hard... (Starts thinking about SELEM 2016...)

"Finished form" is only a few hundred clams! And that's for the larger of the two kits. I'd rather start small and buy one of the small kits to learn and experiment with the tech rather then starting out whole-hog and building a big one from scratch. You want to build a cylinder and wind it yourself by hand with 2 miles of fine copper wire? Go right ahead!

"Larger" in this context means ~7 inches tall vs ~ 5 inches tall. The desktop coils are cute, but if I were going to build one, I'd want one that was at least 3 or 4 ft tall so it could generate decent-sized sparks.

Once you get into that size, you start talking 4 figures large for finished units.

There's a guy on E-bay selling pre-wound secondary coils as long as 20 inches for like $50. My guess is you could get a custom size done for a bit more. Bottom line: No way I would wind my own coil when it's so cheap to get one pre-wound!

But all this is academic at the moment. I need to think long and hard before I commit to one of these monsters!

Ok, I hadn't seen any sites or prices for finished models larger than the desktop ones!

    Go big or go home!??!

Here's one I was looking at:

That still requires some assembly, and it's $5500.

This one looks like a nice compromise between desktop-mini and parking-lot mammoth for $1,300 (fully assembled).

There larger kit is still quite small (Referring to one tesla). I have built this one, even still have one in kit form I am not sure when I'll get to, and might be persuaded to sell cheaper. http://easternvoltageresearch.com/drsstc_minibrute.html
