Some nice developments this year - Brad has blessed us with an upgraded WAN link! We should finally have enough bandwidth to do some proper high quality broadcasting for anyone who can't make it in person. Also on that note, I have been playing with Twitch's new multi-bitrate streaming features, and they are awesome! They partnered with OBS and built a new set of output features that are available to any streamer of any size now; if you have a chunky enough nvidia GPU doing your encoding, you can now locally encode and broadcast the entire set of optional bitrates, up to 6 concurrent streams!

This means that I can send a master super high quality 1080p60 feed for any viewers with enough bandwidth to consume that, but I can also send everything down through 240p and allow the client to select among them in case of network congestion or limited downstream bandwidth. Previously, you could always send a single high quality feed up to 1080p60, but if your channel was not large enough there was no guarantee that Twitch would set aside enough video encoding compute power to transcode all the lower formats for you (and so if your viewers couldn't keep up with your master feed, you were out of luck). I've run this at a few shows now and it works wonderfully! I will post some stream details in here when we have everything running.

Wifi will also be a LOT easier - Brad's new network is pretty baller and should cover any needs for any of your devices which aren't participating in backend duties, so the networks I have previously broadcast for everyone can now be dedicated solely to things that specifically need to talk to things on the control networks. I have upgraded my backbone significantly and will have tons of 1G/10G ports available at both ends of the concert and club setup. Can't wait to jam with you all!

And totally unrelated - some of you have expressed interest in monochrome experiments or general appreciation for lovely golden light....I will have a case of 12x late model Philips 35W LPS lamps with me available for $20 each, and a bit of extra packing material for any buyers. If you're interested, save some room to overpack the shit out of them in transit and bring some extra padding if you've got it. These are fairly small as LPS goes (only about 12" long) but pretty sensitive to rough handling, and nobody wants to spill raw sodium on the way home!

This is very cool! I know a few folks who couldn't attend this year but will be keen to tune in for any live streams of the event.

Correction: you only have 11 available; I called dibs on the first one when you first mentioned this on the recent SELEM Zoom call! And if you have a spare ballast to run it, I'll buy that from you as well. Also, don't forget: We absolutely *MUST* do the "black flame" experiment at some point. I've never seen this in person, but the YouTube videos look amazing...

Speaking of "golden light" though, I haven't heard much more about the other device you have that is capable of producing yellow (and lots of green). Is the CVL going to make an appearance, or are you still struggling to find goggles? (Might want to give Dan Briggs a shout, as I know he was able to find some for his unit.)

Default Scanner Tuning? Schedule for the dome?

Greg Southerland was wondering if we should do another presentation on scanner tuning. I'm happy to do that, but I wasn't sure if there would be any interest in the topic.?. If you'd like to see a demo, please respond below. (I'm also happy to do something one-on-one if that's more comfortable.)

Also, we will have an inflatable planetarium dome in the auditorium side this year. It will be set up near the bar, so that the top of the dome fits into the raised tray of the ceiling on that side of the room. The dome can be inflated or deflated in just a few minutes, making it fairly easy to switch between running shows in the dome vs running shows in the full room, but I'm wondering if we should schedule some specific times for "dome shows" and "auditorium shows".?. What do you all think?

It would be great to make a YouTube video if you can set up cameras and audio in a good spot. I did a search to see if there was already a tutorial for tuning scanners and found this:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNGTKNW99Zw
It's OK but it doesn't go into much detail and doesn't explain the rationale for what is being done and what to look out for. Even if you don't create one at SELEM, the opportunity definitely exists for someone to create a great video on the subject.

As mentioned, I’d still like to see a scanner tuning demo, if possible?

I also would like to see a Radiator tutorial if Chris Short can do one this SELEM?

    See y’all soon!

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

OK, I will plan on doing some scanner tuning at SELEM - perhaps on Tuesday, if that works? Maybe with some help from Wil and Rick, we can get some video of the process, which could later be edited into a tutorial for YouTube. (Might also be able to live-stream it, since it seems that we will have enough bandwidth to do that this year.)

Chris, I definitely want to see some of your shows in the dome as well! I think there were others who were interested in running content in there too, although at present I don't remember who... It might also be nice to see some of the older 8-channel .wav content running in there, similar to what DZ was doing last year.

Do we think we need a fixed schedule for the dome? We've had schedules in the past (especially when we were in Newton), but in recent years things have been trending towards being far less structured. I'm OK either way, but if we want a schedule, we're going to need someone to organize that...

Anybody that's driving North up I-95 to get to SELEM, we are only 5-10 minutes off 95. If you'd like to visit the X-Laser facility for a quick tour on your way up just shoot me an email and we'll coordinate

I'm driving south on Friday and can very likely get you at PHL.

While I've seen you demo it a few times before, I have renewed interest and would like to be there when you do a tutorial.
