I'm looking to make one myself, but with KNBO3 as the lasing medium, as it is possible to achieve higher efficiency direct diode doubling of 970nm with these

with proper temperature control, that could be feasible (and fibered pump diode of course, to achieve desired power density and spot geometry when pumping)

Mode stability of the diode will be an big issue with trying to directly pump a medium. That is why a THG is better....the Yag does wonders here at this point. I would choose type 2 LBO. It's tricky to find that place where all the goodness comes out. But well worth the time to find it.....in hours. Calculations are a must to expect any blue photons. Don't forget to take in the thermal lensing factors of the lasing die itself.....it does effect the cavity.

The usual method is a delta cavity, 4 mirrors in a wishbone shape. And then tracking the mode by moving one mirror on a piezo.

    that's what I'm based on

I have found a document describing such a cavity pumped by a 970nm laser diode + integrated MOPA (which I found), achieving 157mW of 486nm blue with a pump power of 3,7W and no thermal regulation of the KNBO3

they separated the MOPA from the original assembly to avoid noise issues though, and I wonder if I could forget that part and compensate by beam shaping the pump and adjust KNBO3 temperature

do you think a linear cavity would work? certainly with less efficiency, but it might be a nice thing to try for a first "evoluted" DPSS (meaning "not 532nm")

They use the delta so they get a tighter focal spot and more energy, you can try, and it you dont make it, you buy more mirrors.
