Yea, you were helpful with the ILDA format stuff and I thought you were a stand up guy for helping me out. But, since then, other stuff has happened, which lead me to canceling my trip to visit Pangolin when I was out in Florida or ever having any of your products in my possession.

OOPS!!!! Just noticed that myself. Crap...

OK - I edited my post to reflect the correct date, but it will be a while before I can re-upload the show archive with the edited text file.. Sigh. Not enough coffe I guess. (Or maybe too much?)

    Hey Gary!

How does it feel to be one of the "James Lehmans and Carman Garys of the world " ?

    I kinda' love it, myself!

    James.

    PS.

I think it is fair to say that both Gary and I have reactive personalities. I know we've tripped each other's triggers more than once. But I also think we are both creative and driven to make the art of laser display better for everyone; for no other reward than to be known and appreciated for it.

As we are both software engineers and we have made free applications that are now widely used by many people here on the PL, we are both in a unique position with respect to Bill Benner and Pangolin.

I can understand the love that some PL members feel toward the one-and-only Pangolin for making a product that seems to be the only way to control a laser projector.

BUT, I am not and have never been a "user". I'm a "maker".

When I started on LaserBoy, back in 2003, I had TONS of enthusiasm about what I was doing and I thought everyone else would too! I quickly found out that the laser community, although spread out all over the world, is actually a very small, tight-knit group and everyone knows everyone else.

When I made my first announcement about LaserBoy on alt.lasers, many people had already heard about it! I did get a fair amount of encouragement, most of it privately. I also got a consistent stream of distraction and an ongoing effort to discredit my efforts.

It takes a lot of the fun out of it, having to find my motivation from disproving my detractors, rather than answering the requests of my supporters, but what the heck. I'll do it any way I can.

After all, as you might have read in several posts by Bill, I am insane.

You've got a good point Badger! I know that there has been discussion of restricting James Lehman from the forum, but I think there is a greater sense to just give him enough rope to hang himself... Certainly with the number of people who have put him on their "blocked" list, it seems this is happening...

Nevertheless, you are correct. If you look at the original title of this thread, it is "New Pangolin shows on the FTP server". It has gotten pretty far off topic at times...

I guess the best solution is to move some of these discussions (not only Pangolin-related ones, but other ones as well) onto the Pangolin Laserchat forum, where James is not a member. I really hate to do this, since PL seems to have a pretty lively group. But you just don't see the kind of nonsense on the Pangolin laserchat forum...

I suppose another approach would be for PL to institute some kind of "standards" with respect to how people can behave on the forum without having some kind of sanctions brought against them. I've seen my share of "FU%K OFF" type remarks from James towards Buffo.

Sure, with the forum being completely open, unmoderated, and without standards, it allows people to show just how much of a jerk they can be. But if this forum is supposed to about promoting the use of laser displays for everyone, and advancing the technology, the kind of comments James has become known for are really not helping this at all.

    Talking

You're STILL trying to discredit me!

Bill, why don't you just get off my back?

    Pretend I don't even exist.

BTW The exact quote is "So shut the F$%K Up."

The first one came after enduring a string of meaningless buffo BS that had to do with everything BUT software engineering, which resulted in my writing... "You don't write code, S.S.T.F.U"

The second one came after the classic buffo-ism of making a one line contradiction of himself with the statement:

"Thread drift happens, Josh. Who elected you to the position of moderator? Back off."

When I pointed out his hypocrisy, he came back with some crap about how long various people have been PL members.

I reminded him that I have been a member longer and I'm older than him too... S.S.T.F.U.

I don't think of S.S.T.F.U as an insult. It might not be the nicest thing to say, but I see it more like pushing someone out of the way of a speeding train. That person might fall down and skin his knee, but at least he wasn't blasted out of all existence by a force that is far greater than anything he can deal with; the truth about something he knows nothing about.

You, he and others have consistently and repeatedly insulted me directly.

If there was any truth to your posturing about what a great guy you are and how you have reached out to others to make the whole laser community better, then you would know a LOT more about me and my work.

When you first heard about me, back in 2004, you asked me if I wanted to help Pangolin develop in the Linux direction. This came with the stipulation that I needed to sign non-disclosure and non-compete contracts. I said I was not interested in getting myself into anything that would inhibit my own development in the filed of laser display technology.

Since then YOU have been following up on many of the posts that I have made on alt.lasers, the laserist-list and now here on the PL.

You have your own "Pangolin Laserchat forum, where James is not a member."

    S.S.T.F.U.

    James -

Here's a link to a very timely thread started by someone I think you still display some resemblance of respect for:

    http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ead.php?t=5707

You might want to take a look.

    P.S.

Nevermind - As soon as I posted this, I saw you had already been there, true to fashion as always.

I've known Steve since 1996. We've have had our getting-to-know-each-other event.

I think we understand each other well enough now.

I did not start any of this nonsense with Bill or anyone else. It's all there. Read it for yourself.

I just will not let anyone else tell me I'm wrong when I know that I am not.

James, just so that I and the rest of the people here on PL can understand what the heck you are talking about, would you please point to postings where I told you that what you were doing is wrong, or otherwise have offended you?

    As far as I know:
    * I have never posted anything derogatory about Laserboy itself
    * I have never told you that what you were doing is wrong (with the possible exception of your support for what you call the "old Format 3", but then lots of other people have also told you that you are wrong about that, including the ILDA Director Patrick Murphy himself).
    * I also tend to stay away from the Laserboy threads, and to other threads you start (unlike your behavior toward Pangolin-related threads)

If all of this BS is really about Format 3, I am afraid that will be a sad statement indeed!

Also, I have seen you project a generally negative attitude, not only towards me lately, but towards others. Most notably Buffo, but also more recently keeperx.

James, when we met at SELEM, I thought you were a generally alright dude. Even shortly after SELEM, we exchanged some nice words, and even seemed to look forward to working together in some way some day. Is the sudden change in attitude really all about Format 3? Geez!

    Best regards,

    William Benner

On the other hand, James, why don't *you* get off everyone else's back? (Especially Bill's!) *You* started this mess, and *you* keep bringing it up. *You* are the one that can't seem to be polite (re: SSTFU).

In case you haven't figured it out yet, *you* are the problem.
The first one came after enduring a string of meaningless buffo BS that had to do with everything BUT software engineering, which resulted in my writing... "You don't write code, S.S.T.F.U"
See - right there, you once again demonstrate your inability to grasp the gravity of the situation. My reply didn't have anything to do with software because you had already derailed the thread with your paranoid claims. I was trying to point out the mistakes you were making, and your answer was "SSTFU"... My post was not "meaningless"; you simply refused to be open to the possibility that you were acting inappropriately
The second one came after the classic buffo-ism of making a one line contradiction of himself with the statement:

"Thread drift happens, Josh. Who elected you to the position of moderator? Back off."

Over 4000 posts, and that is one of a handful of them where I lost my temper. There was more to that conversation (via PM) that never saw the light of day, but I admit that I snapped back without thinking. I also agree that it was in poor taste, and made amends later that same day. I have apologized to Josh, both publicly and in private, and all the parties involved (including Jem and Anthony) have moved on.

However, calling it a "Classic Buffo-ism" is patently false. If you choose to judge my character based on a statistically insignificant sampling of my posts, then you're being unreasonable.
I reminded him that I have been a member longer and I'm older than him too... S.S.T.F.U.
Older - by a year? Been a member longer - by a month or two? Is that really the best argument you can make? If you want to compare commitment levels, fine. Let's do it.

James, I read *each* and *every* post on this forum every time I log in. There are nearly 57,000 messages in the data base, and I have read *ALL* of them. I have also posted over 4000 messages, and spent countless hours researching the material for many of those posts. (Because unlike guys like Mixed Gas or LaserMan532, I don't have the answer at my fingertips. I frequently have to go *find* the answer, or at least a part of it, before I post.)

To the best of my knowledge, I'm the only one to ever cap the forum limit of 1000 PM's. (Which has since been changed.) I know I'm the only one to hit the character limit per post. I've organized 6 Laser Enthusiast Meetings, and several smaller gatherings of 3-5 people each. What I mean to point out by all this is that I put a *tremendous* amount of my personal time into this place. I *want* to see the hobbyist community grow.

By contrast, your post count was under 100 until about 18 months ago, and apart from the Laserboy threads, you haven't shown an interest in doing much research to help anyone other than yourself. You have helped a few new members get started with LaserBoy, and your work on the correction amp was laudable, but you haven't participated in any of the laser enthusiast's meetings apart from SELEM 2008. As far as I know, you haven't done any traveling out of state to assist new members, and I seriously doubt you answer anywhere near as many phone calls and PM's as I do each and every day.

Now, even with my long history on the forum, I *know* my place around here, and I defer to people like Bill and Steve and Paul. I do not consider myself an "elder"; I'm wise enough to know that you never stop learning. I know a little bit about a lot of topics, and I am willing to help people out as far as I can. If I get them started, pretty soon they'll be off and running by themselves, and one day I might learn from them.

You, on the other hand, seem to think that you've already got it all figured out, and everyone should worship you for your cleverness. I'll admit that I admire your programming ability. And I respect your intelligence. But you have consistently demonstrated a complete lack of ability when it comes to dealing politely with others. And I'm going to call you out on it, regardless of your programming skills.
I don't think of S.S.T.F.U as an insult.
Then you are *way* out of line. Any rational person would agree that telling someone to "shut the fuck up" is *very* insulting. I can't believe you would think that would be acceptable in civil conversation.
    but at least he wasn't blasted out of all existence by a force that is far greater than anything he can deal with;
Are you talking about my posts? Like this one, for example? Or maybe Bill's posts? If you feel "blasted out of existence" by any of this, then maybe you should have been listening to the *very* obvious hints that were dropped *months* ago, by numerous people, before it all escalated to this point.
You, he and others have consistently and repeatedly insulted me directly.
You see those critical posts as insults, because you don't think you've done anything wrong. You have. Several people have pointed it out, yet you remain blind to the fact that you have acted inappropriately.

    Adam
