Hows the monster laser project going?

    Which one... LOL...

Don't bother with the passive Q-switch unless you really need it. I find they tend to eat the rod end if they are not positioned just right. Cats and lasers don't mix. They leave hair and dander on your optics,,,, or knock stuff off the desk..... Lock kitty out of the laser room.

    Laser Warning

Well she was next to fall off...lol Shes 14 years old and still love to chase lasers..lol it didnt help that I had my new 1.3 watt 445 projector running too..
Well I pulled it out and now it just plan sucks... it bearly puts a mark on black paper... Ill have to check aline ment even though theres really no movement the optics can do.. But I know what you mean with the loud pop!! From what I can under stand they dont like to be pushed over 900v, so I think the 800v is right on the money.
Well when I get it fixed, or just getting a new one,Im going to try and put it in a case like the one on youtube, but I want to add a key switch and a warning light, to try and make it some what safe..lol

Yeah, sounds like you have more than a broken Q-switch. The frame could have tweaked when it hit the ground. Let's hope not. It should smoke the hell out of black paper. If I remember correctly the original cap was about 30uF. Also, make sure you wait like 1 minute between pulses. They heat up fast. Keep your target far away or you'll get splatter all over your OC. Good call on the keyswitch and lights. You may also want to put a "Cap Charged" indicator and/or a bleed resistor in there. It's no fun finding out the cap is charged by accident.

    Cool

Im not sure what happend other than it didnt like it...lol But Ive got a new one on the way I was thinking about that last night...Ive been poped too manytimes that way... I was also going to wire in a heater coil to act like a cap. dump, and just for jollys, add a jack and a switch to let run from a wall wort, or off batts. I also heard that you can add a KTP set and make a mean green!?

No, Don't use a heater element. Something like 10K ohm @ 1W for rapid discharge or 1M ohm for slow bleed would be fine. A heating element is like 50 Ohms and will dump way too fast. Yeah, you can pump KTP with a pulsed YAG laser but it's tricky and will blow off coatings if not done correctly. I'd imagine an old laserscope crystal would work good but you'd also need resonator optics.

If you want an emergency cap dump. Get yourself a 1K 5W resistor.
